Memory Stick
Sony's proprietary flash memory format that supplemented floppy storage on later Mavica models.
What is Memory Stick?
Memory Stick is Sony's proprietary flash memory card format, introduced in 1998. It offered dramatically faster read/write speeds and higher capacity than floppy disks — up to 128 MB in the original format.
Mavica models with Memory Stick
Only the later Mavica floppy models added a Memory Stick slot alongside the floppy drive:
- FD92 — Dual floppy + Memory Stick
- FD97 — Dual floppy + Memory Stick
- FD100 — Dual floppy + Memory Stick
- FD200 — Dual floppy + Memory Stick
The CD-series Mavicas (CD200 through CD500) used CD-R/RW instead and did not include Memory Stick.
The MSAC-FD2M adapter
Sony sold the MSAC-FD2M adapter — a Memory Stick reader shaped like a floppy disk that could be inserted into the Mavica's floppy drive. This let older Mavica models read Memory Stick cards, though write speeds were still limited by the floppy interface.
Why it matters today
Original Memory Stick cards are increasingly rare. The adapter allows using standard Memory Stick (not Pro or Duo) cards in any Mavica with a floppy slot, making it a sought-after accessory for collectors.
