White Balance on Mavica
How white balance presets evolved across the Mavica lineup — from auto-only to custom one-push — and tips for getting accurate (or intentionally inaccurate) colour.
What is white balance?
White balance adjusts the colour of the image so that objects that appear white in real life also look white in the photo. Different light sources have different colour temperatures: daylight is bluish, incandescent bulbs are warm/orange, fluorescent tubes are greenish. The camera's white balance system compensates for these shifts.
White balance evolution across the Mavica lineup
| WB Options | Models |
|---|---|
| Auto only (no presets) | FD5, FD7, FD51 |
| Outdoor / Indoor (2 presets) | FD71, FD73, FD75 |
| Daylight / Cloudy / Fluorescent / Incandescent (4 presets) | FD81, FD83, FD85, FD87, FD88, FD100 |
| 4 presets + Flash | FD90, FD91, FD92, FD95, FD97, FD200 |
| 4+ presets + Custom (one-push) | FD88, FD90, FD91, FD92, FD95, FD97, CD-series |
Custom white balance: One-Push and Hold
One-Push
Available on higher-end floppy and all CD-series Mavicas. Point the camera at a white or neutral-grey surface under the ambient light, then press the custom WB button. The camera measures the colour of the light and sets a precise compensation.
Best for: Mixed lighting, unusual light sources (neon, LED, sunset), studio work.
Hold
Some models offer a "Hold" mode that locks the custom white balance reading until you manually clear it. This is useful for shooting a series of images under consistent lighting without the WB drifting.
How auto white balance behaves
Strengths
Auto WB on Mavica cameras handles daylight and overcast conditions reasonably well, especially on later models (FD85+) that have improved AWB algorithms.
Weaknesses
- Incandescent light: Auto WB often leaves a strong orange cast on early models (FD5–FD73). Later models compensate better but rarely eliminate it fully.
- Fluorescent light: The greenish cast from fluorescent tubes is partially corrected but often visible, especially on early models.
- Mixed light: Scenes with multiple light types (window daylight + interior fluorescent) confuse auto WB on all models.
Creative white balance misuse
Many lo-fi photographers intentionally set the "wrong" white balance for creative colour casts:
- Incandescent preset in daylight → strong blue/cool cast
- Daylight preset under fluorescent → enhanced green tint
- Cloudy preset in warm light → extra-warm, golden tone
These "incorrect" settings produce the kind of colour shifts that are characteristic of vintage digital photography and are difficult to replicate authentically in post-processing.
Practical tips
- Shoot a reference frame: At the start of each lighting condition, shoot a white piece of paper. This helps you correct colour in post-processing even if the in-camera WB was off.
- Use presets over auto on early models (FD7, FD71): the 2-option Outdoor/Indoor preset is often more accurate than auto WB in those specific conditions.
- Custom WB for accuracy: If you need genuinely accurate colour (documenting artwork, product photos), always use one-push custom white balance.
- Embrace the cast: The slightly off-white-balance look is part of the Mavica character. Many photographers leave auto WB on and accept whatever colour the camera produces.
