Battery Reconditioning (InfoLithium)
Understanding, sourcing, and maintaining InfoLithium F-series batteries for Mavica cameras.
InfoLithium F-series
All digital Mavica floppy cameras use Sony's InfoLithium F-series batteries. The "Info" prefix means the battery contains a microchip that communicates remaining capacity to the camera — enabling the on-screen battery level indicator.
Battery Options
| Battery | Capacity | Runtime (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| NP-F330 | 7.2V 1200mAh | 30-45 min |
| NP-F550 | 7.2V 2200mAh | 60-90 min |
| NP-F970 | 7.2V 6300mAh | 3-5 hours |
The NP-F330 ships with most Mavica cameras. The NP-F550 and NP-F970 are the same form factor but physically larger — they protrude from the battery compartment but work perfectly.
Third-party batteries
Genuine Sony NP-F batteries are long discontinued. Third-party replacements are widely available (Wasabi Power, RAVPower, etc.) and work well. Key considerations:
- The InfoLithium chip may not be present — the camera will show "---" instead of minutes remaining, but otherwise functions normally
- Quality varies — stick to known brands with good reviews
- Capacity claims are often inflated — expect 60-70% of advertised mAh
Reconditioning old batteries
Lithium-ion batteries that have been stored fully depleted for years may refuse to charge. The cells may have dropped below the protection circuit's minimum voltage:
- Never force-charge a lithium battery that won't charge normally
- If the charger does nothing (no light), the cells may be unrecoverable
- For batteries that charge but die quickly: run 3-4 full charge/discharge cycles
- Store batteries at ~50% charge for long-term storage
Charger Options
- BC-V615 — Sony's original charger, works with all NP-F batteries
- AC-V700 — Dual-purpose AC adapter + charger
- Third-party dual chargers with LCD readout are excellent modern replacements
